Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Nashville starting pitcher Raul Alcantara fired six solid innings and right fielder Jake Smolinski homered while driving in three runs, while Storm Chasers first baseman Frank Schwindel clubbed his team-leading fifteenth longball in the Sounds' 7-1 victory over Omaha on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.
The lone blemish on Alcantara's resume was in the second, when Schwindel smashed a solo shot to left-center to cut Omaha's deficit to one. The right-hander earned his fourth victory, with Sounds relievers Carlos Ramirez (2.0 IP, H, 2 K) and Danny Coulombe (1.0 IP, 2 K) joining forces for the last three shutout frames. Storm Chasers starter Scott Barlow (0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 0 K) suffered the defeat.
Smolinski scored Nashville's first run on C Beau Taylor 's RBI single in the opening inning before knocking in a run in the subsequent frame with a base knock to left to make it 2-0. The Sounds answered Schwindel's roundtripper with a three-run third highlighted by 2B Melvin Mercedes ' run-scoring single to right and CF Ramon Laureano 's sacrifice fly to increase the margin to 5-1. Smolinski drove in his second run with a base hit to left in the fifth prior to capping Nashville's scoring with a solo homer in the eighth.
Smolinski (3-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB) posted a game-high three hits, along with multi-hit efforts from Laureano (2-5, RBI) and Taylor (2-3, R, RBI, 2 BB), as well as LF Nick Martini (2-5, R, BB) and SS Jorge Mateo (2-5, R). Schwindel also recorded his 57th RBI of 2018, which ranks him fifth in the Pacific Coast League. His 15 big flies rank second among Royals minor leaguers behind Lexington's Seuly Matias (24).
Omaha and Nashville continue their five-game homestand with a doubleheader on Monday evening, with game one slated to start at 5:05 p.m. CT. Both games are slated to last seven innings. LHP Jake Kalish (2-2, 3.71) is expected to get the ball for the Storm Chasers in the opener, while the Sounds are anticipated to send RHP Norge Ruiz (0-0, 4.50) to the hill. RHP Ben Bracewell (0-0, 4.50) is set to start the nightcap for Nashville, with Omaha's starter to be determined.
Tickets are still available for that evening and all remaining Storm Chasers home dates in 2018, and may be purchased at www.omahastormchasers.com/tickets as well as by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office at (402) 738-5100.
