El Paso Chihuahuas News Release
EL PASO - Army veteran Oscar Arvizu has been named the Bank of America Manager for a Day announced the Chihuahuas. Arvizu will fill the role during today's Chihuahuas versus Albuquerque (Colorado Rockies) game. The game kicks off the three-day GECU Independence Day Celebration and gates open at 5 p.m.
"I've been thanking my wife for the life that we've built, a life that we keep making better for our children," said Arvizu after receiving the news of his honor. "Seeing how much she thinks of me even after six years is great! She's a wonderful woman and this opportunity has meant so much to me."
"Bank of America is proud to partner with the El Paso Chihuahuas in honoring Oscar Arvizu as the Manager for a Day," said El Paso Market President for Bank of America Kristi Marcum. "This program honors a military veteran who has honorably served his or her country, community, and family. As his bio shows, Oscar has dedicated his life to protect, serve and love all of these. We couldn't think of a finer example to be the Manager for a Day.
"At Bank of America, we believe our military service members and their families represent our country's top talent, and we all have a stake in their success."
The oldest of three, Arvizu was born in Yuma, Ariz. on February 6, 1980. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1998 and was responsible for operating and maintaining the Patriot Missile while stationed at Ft. Bliss. He trained countless soldiers of whom he still keeps in touch with today - his "Battle Buddies."
Following the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001, Arvizu had multiple tours in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea, some tours of which he was in the front lines of war. He suffered loss of his comrades, and despite going through difficult situations in the line of duty and now as a veteran, he is proud to have served in the U.S. Army.
He received numerous awards including the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon.
Following his 12 years of service, Arvizu and his wife Darlene, and children Madeline and Dean, made El Paso, Texas home.
As the Bank of America Manager for a Day, Arvizu will be given the following experiences:
- Throw out a first pitch
- Attend batting practice
- Enjoy pre-game experiences in the clubhouse and on the field.
- Meeting at the plate with managers and umpires
- Be a part of the starting lineups
- Six (6) tickets to Sunday's game
- Personalized jersey
- On-field recognition
- An inning on air with Tim Hagerty
"The Chihuahuas, along with Bank of America, are honored to announce Oscar Arvizu as the Manager for a Day," said Chihuahuas Vice President and General Manager Brad Taylor. "He is a true American hero and we are proud to honor and thank him for his service to his country and family."
Arvizu was nominated by his wife, Darlene, through a social media contest held by the Chihuahuas. Fans were asked to submit a veteran they felt deserved to be the Bank of America Manager for a Day along with a biography.
"I am always looking for ways to acknowledge his hard work, so that it doesn't go unseen," she said. "We pick each other up and push each other to be better and there's no one else who has made me feel as loved or that I'll love more than him. That's why I nominated him for Bank of America's Manager for the Day."
The other finalists were honored during Saturday's game.
Plenty of great seats remain for the GECU Independence Day Celebration that includes two nights of Fireworks Spectacular! Fans are encouraged to purchase in advance as prices increase on the day of the game. Fans can buy tickets at EPChihuahuas.com or in person at the Durango or Santa Fe Box Offices.
