Memphis Redbirds News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Luke Voit finished hitting for the cycle in a 13-2 Memphis Redbirds romp in the resumption of last night's suspended game, and the Redbirds banged out 12 hits in a 6-1 victory in the regularly-scheduled third game of the series Sunday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
With the two victories, the first-place Redbirds improve to 51-32 on the season.
Resumed Game: Memphis 13, Iowa 2
After last night's game was suspended due to rain with Memphis leading 3-1 in the top of the fifth, the Redbirds picked up right where they left off and scored in every inning once the contest was resumed.
After tripling in the first inning and singling in the third Saturday night, Voit finished the cycle with a fifth-inning double and a ninth-inning home run Sunday afternoon after also singling in the sixth.
He became the first Redbird to hit for the cycle since Mark Little on June 23, 2000, and he finished the ballgame 5-for-6 with five RBI. Carson Kelly drove in three runs, and five Redbirds had multiple hits in the game. Tyler O'Neill, Kelly, and Oscar Mercado all homered along with Voit.
Jake Woodford allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk in 4.0 innings Saturday night but did not return to the mound on Sunday, and he was followed by four relievers. Rehabbing Matt Bowman gave up a run on two hits in an inning, and fellow injury rehabber Luke Gregerson got the win with a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts. Hector Mendoza and Conner Greene tossed the final 3.0 innings without allowing a hit.
Mercado stole his 19th base of the season in the win.
Regularly-Scheduled Game: Memphis 6, Iowa 1
Memphis captured game three of the series, 6-1, behind strong starting pitching by All-Star Daniel Poncedeleon and three hits apiece by Max Schrock and Alex Mejia. It was a 2-1 ballgame until the Redbirds plated two in each of the final two innings, the sixth and the seventh.
Poncedeleon gave up one unearned run on two hits in 5.0 innings to improve to 7-3, and he struck out eight while walking four. He lowered his ERA to 2.57.
Schrock and Mejia both went 3-for-4 and combined to score three of Memphis' six runs. Oscar Mercado had two hits, and Randy Arozarena hit his third home run of the season. Voit had a pinch-hit RBI double in the contest.
After Poncedeleon left the game, Andrew Morales and Edward Mujica finished off the game with two scoreless frames.
The Redbirds and Cubs play twice more, continuing tomorrow at 7:08 p.m., before Memphis returns to AutoZone Park on Wednesday for the 4th of July Celebration, presented by AutoZone.
