Sounds Slug Redbirds in Opener

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis dropped the series opener to Nashville 6-3 Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

The Sounds jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning and extended their lead to three runs on Luis Cruz's solo homer in the fourth. The Redbirds climbed back within a run in the fourth but the Sounds played long ball again in the sixth with Brendan Katin's two-run shot. Martin Maldonado capped the night's scoring with Nashville's third homer of the night, a solo home run in the seventh. Cruz finished the night with three hits and two runs scored to lead the Sounds. Ruben Gotay had a season-best four hits and Allen Craig chipped in three hits in Memphis' third straight loss.

Redbirds starter Evan MacLane tossed the club's first complete game of the year in taking the loss. The lefty allowed six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in his seventh loss of the year. Sounds starter Chase Wright earned his second win in a week over Memphis with a six-inning effort. The lefty gave up three runs on 10 hits for his sixth win. Chris Smith notched his league-leading 17th save with a spotless ninth inning.

Memphis and Nashville will play two scheduled seven-inning games tomorrow as part of a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 6:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. The ‘Birds send Lance Lynn to the bump in the first game to face Nashville's Sam Narron. In the second game Memphis has yet to announce a start against the Sounds Marty McLeary.
