RedHawks Down Z's Behind Petit's Two Grand Slams
June 22, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Gregorio Petit had 34 career home runs entering in an eight-year professional career entering the 2010 season, none of which were grand slams.
He hit two grand slams at Zephyr Field on Tuesday night, driving in eight of Oklahoma City's 10 runs as the RedHawks rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to beat the New Orleans Zephyrs 10-5.
Petit's first slam came in the fourth inning, after Zephyrs starter Rick VandenHurk walked the bases loaded, then walked Hernan Iribarred with one out to force in a run and a pitching change. Petit greeted Jay Buente with a towering drive over the wall in the left field corner to tie the score at 5-5.
Still tied in the eighth, again Petit came up with the bases loaded, and hit the first pitch he saw from Brett Sinkbeil over the fence in left-center, giving him his second grand slam of the game and a career-high eight RBI.
"The first one was a split finger and the second one was a slider," Petit said after Tuesday night's game. "On the first one, I was just trying to put the ball in play."
"And then with the second, I never thought it was going to go out but I knew I hit it well and knew it was in the gap. I got excited because I knew it would take the lead but the ball kept going and well, thank you!"
It was the first eight-RBI performance by a RedHawk since Victor Diaz on September 1, 2007 at Albuquerque.
The night began well for the Zephyrs, who grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run homer by Gookie Dawkins, his second home run in three days.
The lead was extended to 5-0 the next inning, as Brett Carroll delivered a two-run double, and scored on a single by Scott Cousins.
But VandenHurk could not protect the lead despite allowing just one hit, finishing with five walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Jay Buente was charged with just one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief, while Brett Sinkbeil (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs - four earned - without retiring a batter in the eighth.
Geoff Geary (4-5) pitched four scoreless innings for Oklahoma City to earn the victory.
The series with the first-place RedHawks continues Wednesday with right-handers Brian Lawrence and Tanner Scheppers squaring off at 7:00 p.m.
