Sounds Drop Baby Cakes in Extras

Juremi Profar's bloop single drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Jose Trevino added a two-run double to lift the Nashville Sounds to a 4-2 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Saturday night.

Starters Tim Dillard and Mike Kickham engaged in a pitchers duel which saw the teams combine for six hits against them. Scott Heineman's solo home run in the fourth inning was one of four hits against Kickham and gave Nashville a short-lived lead.

Peter O'Brien led off the bottom of the fifth with the Baby Cakes' first hit of the night, a single up the middle, and successfully tested the arm of center fielder Eli White in advancing to third base on Isaac Galloway's one-out single. The baserunning risk paid off when Jon Berti lifted a fly ball to center, allowing O'Brien to trot home with the tying run.

Neither club put a runner in scoring position again until Magneuris Sierra greeted Sounds reliever Locke St. John with a double in the eighth, but Isan Diaz struck out to end the threat.

The Baby Cakes had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth after Lewis Brinson led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Sounds elected to intentionally walk Deven Marrero and O'Brien to load the bases, and the strategy worked as Tyler Heineman bounced into an inning-ending double play to send the game into extras.

With runners at second and third and one out in the top of the 10th, Profar's blooper landed in front of Sierra in right field to bring home the go-ahead run against Kyle Keller (2-3), and Trevino roped a double off the base of the wall in left-center to plate two more.

Galloway opened the bottom half with a run-scoring double, but stumbled while rounding second base and was tagged out after suffering an apparent leg injury. Sounds closer David Carpenter recovered by retiring the final two batters and nail down his 18th save and hand New Orleans its eighth defeat in 11 extra-inning contests.

St. John (1-2) worked around two hits to claim the win in relief of Dillard, who spun 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, the longest start by a Nashville pitcher this season.

Kickham worked seven innings for the Baby Cakes and fanned nine, a season-high.

The 'Cakes and Sounds wrap up the three-game set and the season series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
