Sounds Blanked By Fresno In Series Opener

May 25, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release

FRESNO – The Nashville Sounds continued their struggle to find an offensive rhythm on Monday evening, managing only six hits as they were shut out for the second consecutive game in a 5-0 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies in the opener of a four-game series at Grizzlies Stadium.

The loss was Nashville's third in a row, equaling their longest losing streak of the season, and dropped the second-place Sounds 3 ½ games behind PCL East-leading Oklahoma. Nashville (21-22) carries a losing record for the first time since May 8.

The Sounds – who were shut out for the fifth time this season and third time in their last five games – have not scored in their last 21 innings. Nashville has been blanked in consecutive games by Sacramento and Fresno the past two nights, the first time they have endured back-to-back shutout losses since July 22 & 23, 2002 against Calgary and New Orleans.

The host Grizzlies jumped on the board first, plating four unearned runs in the first inning against Sounds starter Nelson Figueroa as the result of a throwing error by shortstop Shaun Skrehot.

Fresno rightfielder Todd Linden opened the scoring by plating Brian Dallimore with a one-out single to right. Fresno added a second run in the frame on Adam Shabala's two-out RBI line-drive single off the tip of the glove of Sounds second baseman Mike Moriarty. Grizzlies shortstop Jamie Athas followed with a two-run single up the middle, again off Moriarty's glove, to extend the lead to 4-0.

Grizzlies first baseman Damon Minor extended the lead to 5-0 in the third with a one-out solo homer to right off Figueroa, his ninth roundtripper of the season.

Sounds third baseman Luis Figueroa extended his season-best hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-2 effort that included a single and a double before being removed from the game in the fourth inning.

Pettyjohn (2-4) fanned six over six scoreless frames to pick up the victory. Nelson Figueroa (4-4) took the loss for the Sounds after allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits in his six innings of work.

Reliever Jason Boyd made his 2004 Sounds debut by tossing a scoreless eighth inning, working into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the process. The veteran joined Nashville earlier in the day after being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh and clearing waivers last week.

The teams continue the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT meeting on Tuesday evening at Grizzlies Stadium. Nashville right-hander Justin (2-0, 3.43) makes his third start of the season for the Sounds. He is unscored upon in 11 innings in his two previous starts. Reid will be opposed by Fresno right-hander Ryan Jensen (3-2, 4.88).
