Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jon Knott clubbed two home runs and had five RBIs to lead the Portland Beavers to a 7-1 victory over the Omaha Royals Monday night at PGE Park.
Knott lined a two-run homer that easily cleared the wall in left field to put the Beavers up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. His second home run of the game, a three-run blast to right-center, pushed Portland's lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third.
It was Knott's second two-homer game of the season. In addition, the left fielder upped his Pacific Coast League-leading RBI total to 45.
In his first start since Aug. 13, 2003, Marty McLeary was sharp in 4.0 innings, giving up just one hit before handing things over to right-hander Mike Bumstead, who joined the shorthanded Beavers (21-24) on Monday from Class A Lake Elsinore.
Bumstead, a fourth-year professional who was a non-drafted free agent pickup of the Padres in 2001, worked 1.2 innings and gave up a run on Rick Short's sixth-inning RBI single in his Triple-A debut.
Bumstead left the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth, but Blaine Neal (3-2) came on to get Alexis Gomez to end the inning.
Yamid Haad singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and scored to make it 6-1 when Joe Gerber laced a single to left and Gomez misplayed it in the outfield. Gerber later scored on a wild pitch to give Portland a 7-1 advantage.
Bernie Castro reached base four times, had two doubles among his three hits and was on base for both of Knott's homers.
Doug Linton (2-4) took the loss for the Royals, gave up seven runs on 10 hits.
The Beavers, who had more errors than runs scored in their recent four-game series with the Iowa Cubs, had one error in Monday's win.
Left-hander Sterling Hitchcock gets his second rehab start for the Beavers Tuesday night as they take on the Royals (18-27) at 7:05 p.m. at PGE Park.
NOTES: Mike Bynum, Gerber, Matt Hampton and Brian Sweeney visited with patients at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital Monday morning ... in addition to Bumstead, the Beavers added left-hander Eddie Oropesa to the roster on Monday from the San Diego Padres ... Knott and J.J. Furmaniak have combined to hit eight of the Beavers' last nine home runs ... Knott has tallied five RBIs twice this season ... the Beavers have won six straight against Omaha and haven't lost to the Royals since June 12, 2002.
