Edmonton Trappers News Release

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that first baseman Nick Johnson has been assigned to the club on Major League injury rehabilitation. Johnson's rehab assignment was transferred from Single-A Brevard County, where he hit .190 (4-for-21) with one home run and five RBI in six games. He will be available for Edmonton's game on Tuesday night in Oklahoma against the RedHawks. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders, plus two players (right-hander Seung Song and infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list, two players on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment (Tony Armas Jr. and Nick Johnson) and one player on the suspended list (Luis Lopez).

Johnson, 25, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 with a lumbar strain. He was assigned to Brevard County on May 18 and began his rehab assignment with the Manatees that day. Johnson was acquired by the Montreal Expos on December 4 as part of the trade that sent right-handed pitcher Javier Vasquez to the New York Yankees. The native of Sacramento, California was originally selected by the Yankees in the third round of the 1996 draft and spent the past eight seasons in their organization. He spent most of the 2003 season with New York, batting .284 (92-for-324) with 14 home runs and 47 RBI in 96 games. Johnson missed 61 games last year due to a stress fracture of the third metacarpal bone in his right hand. He entered the 2004 campaign with a career .256 (197-for-769) average, 31 home runs and 113 RBI in 248 Major League games. Johnson had a .297 (507-for-1705) average, 68 home runs and 306 RBI in 518 minor league games.

The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, May 28 when the club will take on the Sacramento River Cats. The game will begin at 7:05 PM. Tickets for all regular season home games are on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 451-8000.
