Sidewinders pound Isotopes again

May 25, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson put four runs on the scoreboard in the first inning Tuesday night and added four more in the ninth to defeat Albuquerque 9-4 and move back into first place in the PCL South Division. Sacramento lost to Memphis and dropped one half game back of the Sidewinders.

The first inning marked the fifth time this year the Sidewinders have scored four or more runs in the first frame. The runs also came one day after Tucson pounded out 19 hits in a 13-1 win over Albuquerque on Monday night. The Sidewinders hammered three home runs in the game and have eight in the two games of the series.

In the third inning Isotopes starter Aaron Small fired an 0-2 pitch over the head of Luis Terrero. Terrero and Albuquerque catcher Matt Treanor started talking to each other before they started to exchange punches. The benches emptied and a brief brawl ensued. Both Treanor and Terrero were ejected.

Craig Ansman pushed the Sidewinders lead to 5-0 when he slammed a solo home run off Small leading off the fifth inning.

The Isotopes scored an unearned run off Tucson starter Mike Gosling in the fifth to get on the board. Gosling left after six innings allowing five hits and the one unearned tally. The left-hander walked three and struck out four while earning his first win of the year.

Albuquerque scored two runs in the seventh to close within 5-3. Shane Nance came out of the bullpen to strike out Drew Niles with two runners on base to end the inning. Nance came back out in the eighth and allowed two straight singles. However he induced a groundball double play off the bat of Wilson Valdez and retired Derek Wathan on a ground ball to end the threat.

Tucson put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth inning. Andy Green started the scoring with a solo home run, his third of the series. The home run was Green's seventh of the season, establishing a new career high. After a walk to Julio Ramirez, Tim Olson singled and Alan Zinter blasted a three-run homer for the final 9-3 margin.

Tucson's record improved to 26-19. The Sidewinders will play game three of the series Wednesday night with a 6:11 p.m. (Tucson time) start. Phil Stockman (2-2 5.12) will start for Tucson against the Isotopes Matt Blank (2-0 3.86). The game will be broadcast live on Cool 1450 AM.
