SOUND TIGERS WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT MARK LEE
Center - Shoots: Left
Height: 5'11'' Weight: 186 lbs
Born: September 11, 1984 in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland
Signed as a free agent with the Sound Tigers this past summer
What does it means to be a "Newfie", and how do you feel when you hear the term?
It's being proud of where you're from. Hockey is the main sport there, so for me, being a "Newfie" and coming from a hockey province like Newfoundland, makes it really satisfying being where I am and hopefully to where I want to be.
How did you learn to speak French?
I had a French roommate in junior, so I was able to pick up some from him, but if you ask me to speak fluently I'd have a problem. I don't know if I'd call myself bilingual; I have enough trouble with English, never mind French.
What made you want to be a hockey player?
My father owns and operates hockey schools in Newfoundland. Growing up I was always around the sport with my father, so I obviously picked it up that way. As a kid watching the St. John's Maple Leafs play in the AHL and now to be in the same league that they were in is a great thrill.
What player did you grow up idolizing?
I grew up watching mainly St. John's, but to pick a single player, I'd have to say Wayne Gretzky in the later parts of his career. Seeing him play the game and carry himself away from the rink as a true professional really drew my attention to him.
Since the events of 2001, what has it been like celebrating your birthday on September 11th?
It is tough to celebrate a day like that, but it is my birthday, so I try not to think of the disaster and just enjoy myself.
