Bridgeport Islanders News Release
For the second straight game, the Sound Tigers played a sound first two periods but collapsed in the third period. On Wednesday it was the Lowell Devils who came from behind in the final period, and tonight, the Norfolk Admirals handed the Sound Tigers their third straight loss, beating them 2-1 with two goals within the first minute of the third period.
In the first period, both net-minders held the scoreboard at 0-0 with the Sound Tigers clinging to a 14 to 10 shots on goal advantage. Admirals' goalie, Jonathan Boutin made a big save with about seven minutes remaining in the first period and was able to control the rebound as Darryl Bootland was standing on the doorstep ready to pounce on a loose puck. Sound Tigers' goalie, Joey MacDonald was solid as well making several big saves with his team down a man in the final minute with Andrew MacDonald in the penalty box.
As the Sound Tigers were killing the carry over penalty to Andrew MacDonald from the opening frame, Blake Comeau and Jeremy Colliton got their team on the board. Comeau streaked into Norfolk's zone and fed a pass to Colliton who snapped the puck past Boutin for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Colliton's second goal and the Sound Tigers first short-handed goal of the season. Bootland made his presence felt in his first game with the Sound Tigers when he delivered a huge hit to Admirals' forward Chris Lawrence five minutes into the middle frame. With the Sound Tigers on another penalty-kill with six minutes remaining in the second period, Norfolk's Blair Jones slipped a cross-ice pass to Justin Taylor who fired a one-timer that Joey MacDonald was able to slide from post-to-post and make a sprawling left pad save. The puck was laying in front of Joey MacDonald, but he was able to jump on the rebound before the Admirals could lift the puck over him and keep the score at 1-0 going into the third period.
The Admirals took the intermission to regroup and quickly buried two goals on the Sound Tigers within the first minute of play to take the 2-1 lead. Jones scored his third goal of the season with the assists going to Kyle Wanvig and Rob Klinkhammer. Lawrence followed suit just 23 seconds later when he gave Norfolk the 2-1 lead on his second goal of the season. Taylor and Norm Milley picked up the assists on the go-ahead goal and eventual game winner.
The Sound Tigers out-shot the Admirals 34-33 as Joey MacDonald made 32 saves and Norfolk goalkeeper, Boutin had 33. Both teams were scoreless on their man-advantage opportunities but the Sound Tigers did score their first short-handed goal of the season.
