Peoria Rivermen News Release
Three power play goals by the Grand Rapids Griffins helped sink the Peoria Rivermen in a 5-3 win Saturday night at Carver Arena in front of 4,223 fans.
Grand Rapids jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage just 26 seconds into the game as Mark Hartigan jumped on a loose puck in front of the Peoria goal and chipped it home over a sprawling Jason Bacashihua. Jonathan Ericsson followed with a power play goal that was inadvertently tipped past the Rivermen netminder by a Peoria defender at 11:12 for a 2-0 edge.
Charles Linglet turned the momentum Peoria's way when he pounced on a loose puck that had squirted through the arm of Griffins goaltender Adam Berkhoel for his first tally of the season, a five-on-three power play marker to make it 2-1 after one period.
After Garrett Stafford opened up a 3-1 lead for Grand Rapids, the Rivermen scored twice in a 25 second span to tie the game. Micki DuPont sprung Mike Glumac with a home run pass from deep in his own end for a power play goal at 7:45.
That play was quickly followed by a Rivermen rush back into the Griffins zone, with Aaron MacKenzie firing a shot that Berkhoel kicked out with the left pad, putting a rebound in the slot for a charging Michal Birner who poked the puck home to tie the game at three.
Back swung the pendulum towards Grand Rapids, however, as Carl Corazzini registered the Griffins' third power play goal of the game at 10:42 to make it a 4-3 game and mark the end of the night for Bacashihua, who was replaced by Marek Schwarz in the Peoria goal.
Peoria continued to pound on the Griffins in the third period, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Berkhoel and company. In the end, Grand Rapids was able to secure the win with an empty net goal courtesy of Jamie Tardif at 19:59 for the 5-3 final.
Bacashihua finished with 9 saves on 13 shots and was hung with the loss, while Schwarz stopped all eight shots faced in relief. Berkhoel earned the win stopping 34-of-37 shots against on the night.
The same two teams meet tomorrow afternoon in Grand Rapids with puck drop slated for 3 pm CST. The pre-game show begins at 2:30 pm CST with Tom Callahan on your Home for Rivermen Hockey, 96.5 ESPN Radio.
