Sound Tigers Lose 6-2 To Binghamton

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 6-2 to the Binghamton Senators at home Sunday, snapping their four-game winning streak in the season series with the top team in the East Division.

Binghamton took a 1-0 lead when Denis Hamel fed Antoine Vermette for his 26th goal of the season, a shorthanded tally, 1:39 into the game, but the Sound Tigers answered with a goal on the same power play by Joe Tallari, his third marker of the season, at 3:02 off assists from Jason Guerriero and John Morlang.

The Senators regained the lead 1:17 into the middle frame when First Team AHL All-Star Jason Spezza made it 2-1 with his 32nd goal and league-leading 113th point of the season off assists from AHL All-Rookie Team member Brandon Bochenski and Chris Kelly.

Binghamton upped the lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Vermette, his second goal of the game and 27th of the season, off assists from Josh Langfeld and Jesse Fibiger at 5:47 of the middle frame. The Senators extended the lead to 4-1 when Bochenski tallied his 32nd goal of the season off an assist from Chris Kelly with 4:37 left in the second period. Just 2:51 later, Pat Kavanagh caught Sound Tiger goalie Dieter Kochan off-guard behind the net and scored a shorthanded goal, his 14th goal of the season. Kavanagh's unassisted marker made it 5-1.

Kochan was replaced by Wade Dubielewicz at the start of the third period after making 13 saves through 40 minutes of work.

Justin Papineau scored his 18th goal of the season, unassisted and on the power-play, 12:17 into the third period to cut the lead to 5-2, but Binghamton made it 6-2 just 35 seconds later when Langfeld notched his 31st goal of the season off an assist from Vermette.

Vermette was the first star of the game with two goals and an assist, Bochenski was the second star with a goal and an assist and Spezza was the third star with a goal. The Sound Tigers, who held a 38-30 shots on goal advantage, were 2 for 8 on the power-play while the Senators were 1 for 5. Binghamton netminder Billy Thompson made 36 saves for the win. Dubielewicz stopped 11 of 12 shots he faced.

The Sound Tigers will visit the Albany River Rats this Wednesday at 7 p.m. and return home to finish the season with a pair of games at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard next weekend against the Manchester Monarchs Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Hershey Bears next Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
