LaCouture, Toivonen lead Bruins to win
April 10, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins and Hartford Wolf Pack concluded their 10-game season series on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence, with the Bruins skating to a hard-fought 2-1 victory. The Bruins finished the season series with a 5-3-0-2 record. Providence remains in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with its 39-28-3-7 (88 points) record. The win, coupled with the Worcester IceCats' 4-2 loss to the Springfield Falcons, reduced the Black and Gold's "magic number" to clinch a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs to two. Any combination of Bruin points gained and Worcester points missed equaling two will put Providence in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 11th time in the 13-year history of the franchise.
Bruin center Brad Boyes scored his 33rd goal of the season on a second period power play. The power play goal was his league-leading 20th of the season, further extending his franchise single-season record. Boyes is tied for eighth in AHL scoring with 33-42-75 totals. Left wing Dan LaCouture notched the game-winner on a second period shorthanded tally. The goal was his 12th of the season.
Providence goaltender Hannu Toivonen stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced for the win. Toivonen is 28-17-3 on the season. The 20-year-old native of Kalvola, Finland is tied for sixth in the AHL with a 2.04 GAA and ranks fifth with a .932 save percentage.
The Bruins close out the season next weekend, beginning with a pivotal home-and-home series with the Worcester IceCats. The teams face off in Providence on Friday, April 15 at 7:05 p.m. and on Saturday in Worcester at 7:05 p.m. The Bruins close out the regular season when they host the Portland Pirates on Sunday, April 17 at 4:05 p.m.
