April 10, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-2 to the Lowell Lock Monsters at home Saturday night in front of 5,824 fans surpassing their single-season attendance record. The Sound Tigers have drawn a total 199,854 fans this season and still have three home games left on their schedule.
Eric Staal opened the scoring for Lowell 14:17 into the first period with his 25th goal and team-leading 73rd point of the season. The shorthanded, unassisted goal put the Lock Monsters up 1-0.
The Sound Tigers tied the game at 1-1 with 2:04 left in the first period when Justin Papineau notched his 17th goal of the season with an extra skater on the ice during a delayed-penalty call off assists from Ryan Caldwell and Justin Mapletoft. The goal marked the second time in as many nights Papineau scored off assists from and Caldwell and Mapletoft.
The Sound Tigers thought they had taken a 2-1 lead early in the middle frame on a power-play goal by Jason Guerriero when his shot knocked the water bottle loose atop the net, but the goal judge did not turn on the light, and referee Steve Kozari, after consulting with the goal judge at the next stoppage in play, ruled the puck had not gone through the net.
AHL All-Rookie Team member Chris Campoli did put the Sound Tigers ahead 2-1 with his 15th goal of the season off assists from Matt Koalska and Bruno Gervais at the 12:40 mark of the second period. Campoli now owns both the single-season and career records for goals by a Sound Tigers defenseman with 15 in each category.
Lowell fought back with a pair of third-period goals. The first came just 20 seconds in when Colin Forbes scored his 26th of the season off an assist from Staal to tie the game at 2-2. The Lock Monsters pulled ahead to 3-2 on a power-play goal by Mark Giordano, his sixth marker of the season, off assists from First Star Team AHL All-Star Chuck Kobasew and Staal with 6:36 left to play.
The Sound Tigers called timeout and pulled netminder Wade Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with 1:33 left in the game but were unable to score.
Staal was the first star of the game with a goal and two assists, Giordano was the second star with the game-winner and Dubielewicz was the third star with 29 saves. Lowell goaltender Brent Krahn made 31 saves for the win. The Sound Tigers had a 33-32 shots on goal advantage. The Lock Monsters were 1 for 3 on the power play and 5 for 5 on the penalty kill.
The Sound Tigers will host the Binghamton Senators tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. before visiting the Albany River Rats Wednesday at 7 p.m. then returning home to finish the season next weekend when they host the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday, April 16th at 7:05 p.m. and the Hershey Bears on Sunday, April 17th at 4:05 p.m.
The Sound Tigers are wearing their all-black uniforms this weekend. The black jerseys will be auctioned off following tomorrow's game to benefit "Swim Across the Sound". The Sound Tigers will also host a charity contest pitting the Bridgeport Fire Department against the Bridgeport Police Department following tomorrow's game. Proceeds from that game will benefit "Swim Across the Sound" as well.
