Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - Goaltender Dan Ellis was outstanding, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced and picking up his tenth win of the season while leading the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over the Manitoba Moose on Saturday night at the MTS Centre.
The Bulldogs maintained their six-point lead over the Syracuse Crunch for the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division as the Crunch defeated the Rochester Americans 5-2 earlier in the night. Syracuse (76 games) still has a game-in-hand over Hamilton (77 games).
The win gives the Bulldogs 85 points, officially eliminating the Edmonton Road Runners and the Cleveland Barons from the playoffs. The Road Runners and Barons can only accumulate 84 points each if they were to win out their remaining scheduled games.
Hamilton opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first period when Jonathan Ferland walked out in-front of the Manitoba net from the corner and back-handed a shot past goaltender Alex Auld. The unassisted goal was Ferland's sixth marker of the season.
The teams traded goals in the second period. First Duncan Milroy gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the 7:53 mark. Then with 58 seconds left in the frame, Manitoba forward Jeff Herema cut the Bulldogs lead in half with his 14th goal of the season. Herema's goal came on the power play and made the score 2-1.
Just 54 seconds into the third period, Steve Begin gave the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. Andrei Kostitsyn drove to the Moose net and left a rebound for Begin who made no mistake to make the score 3-1.
Gavin Morgan added an empty net goal with just 9 seconds left in the game to make the score 4-1. Steve Begin and Jason Ward posted assists on the final goal of the game.
Hamilton was able to post the victory despite firing only 14 shots on goal, one shy of the franchise all-time low.
The Bulldogs next game is tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, April 10th) against the Manitoba Moose at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Game time is 3:00 p.m. and Bulldogs fans can listen to Derek Wills call all the action, starting with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m. on 820 CHAM in Hamilton, on the Team 990 in Montreal, or via the Internet at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com.
