Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-2 on the road in their second Thanksgiving visit to play the Binghamton Senators in as many seasons. The Sound Tigers won 5-4 last year.
Binghamton led 3-0 after a wild first period that saw 68 minutes in penalties called, including three game misconducts. The line of Jason Spezza, Chris Kelly and Denis Hamel hooked up for the Senators ¬â¢ first two goals with Kelly notching his fourth of the season at the 3:56 mark and Hamel adding his team-leading 13th 4:57 later. Each player assisted on the goal by the other with Spezza collecting his team-leading 17th and 18th helpers on the plays.
Christoph Schubert made it 3-0 Binghamton with 7:19 left in the opening frame with his fourth goal of the year off an assist from Antoine Vermette. On the play, Schubert jabbed a loose puck that popped in the air and rolled down the back of Sound Tigers Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz and into the net.
The majority of the penalties were called at the 5:00 mark as Eric Godard, Sean Bergenheim and Justin Mapletoft tangled with the Senators' Josh Langfeld, Pat Kavanagh and Jan Platill. Mapletoft, Kavanagh and Platill were thrown out of the game following the brawl.
The parade to the penalty box continued in the second period, and the Sound Tigers took advantage as Kevin Colley scored his third goal of the season, and second in as many games, 7:30 into the middle frame off assists from Matt Koalska and Cole Jarrett. Colley beat Binghamton Netminder Ray Emery during a major penalty after Brian McGrattan was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing Godard.
The Sound Tigers pulled to within 3-2 on another power-play goal as Rob Collins notched his fourth marker of the season, his second in as many games, 8:07 into the third period off assists from Bruno Gervais and Justin Papineau.
The Sound Tigers called their timeout and pulled Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with 58 seconds left to play but could not tie the game.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 2 for 9 on the power play and with a 35-25 shots on goal advantage, their third in as many games. The Senators were 1 for 7 on the power play. Hamel was the first star of the game, Kelly the second and Emery the third with 33 saves. Dubielewicz made 22 saves in a losing effort, which snapped his three-game win streak.
The Sound Tigers will host the Hartford Wolf Pack tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. and visit the Worcester IceCats Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com.
Tomorrow's game will be third of the 2004-05 Geico Connecticut Cup, and the first two-thousand fans who enter Bridgeport ¬â¢s Arena at Harbor Yard will received the first of this season ¬â¢s player card sets-- featuring Wade Dubielewicz, Eric Godard, Cole Jarrett and Ryan Caldwell --courtesy of Roberto's Restaurant in downtown Bridgeport.
