Bridgeport Islanders News Release
LOWELL, MA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, tied yet another franchise record with their ninth win in a row and also improved their unbeaten-in-regulation streaks to 15 games overall at 13-0-1-1 and eight on the road at 7-0-1 with a 4-3 overtime win over the Lowell Lock Monsters Saturday.
Mattias Weinhandl opened the scoring with his second goal in as many nights, his third of the season, off assists from Ben Guite and Cail MacLean 9:41 into the game. Jeff Hamilton then doubled the Sound Tigers' lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal off assists from Guite and Brandon Smith with 3:12 left in the first period. Hamilton's goal was his AHL-leading 16th overall and League-leading tenth on the advantage. It also extended the Sound Tigers' power-play scoring streak to nine games.
Martin Sonnenberg put Lowell on the scoreboard with his ninth goal of the season off an assist from Mike Zigomanis at 17:38 of the second period to make it 2-1. The goal snapped a 104:28 shutout streak for the Sound Tigers dating back to the third period of Thursday's road win over the Binghamton Senators and through last night's 3-0 shutout of the Hartford Wolf Pack at home.
Lowell tied the game at 2-2 on Sonnenberg's second goal of the game, his team-leading tenth of the season, just 2:13 into the third period. It was an unassisted goal.
The Sound Tigers regained the lead at 3-2 on a delayed-penalty goal by Guite, his second goal of the year, off assists from Cole Jarrett and Alan Letang with 5:14 left to play, but Lowell tied the game at 3-3 on Pavel Brendl's ninth goal of the season at 18:33 off an assist from Zigomanis. Brendl scored with Lock Monsters Goaltender Dany Sabourin on the bench in favor of an extra attacker.
There were a total of ten penalty minutes assessed in an eventful overtime including a tripping minor to Zigomanis at the 2:58 mark, and the Sound Tigers took advantage as Hamilton scored another goal on the advantage, his fifth game-winning marker of the season, with 29 seconds left in the extra session off assists from Eric Manlow and Smith.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 2 for 5 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill. They won despite being outshot 43-25 but did manage a 6-3 advantage in overtime. Dieter Kochan made 40 saves to improve his personal winning streak to five games and his unbeaten-in-regulation streak to ten games at 7-0-2-1. Sabourin made 21 saves in a losing effort.
Guite was the first star of the game, Sonnenberg the second, and Hamilton the third.
