BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were beaten by the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-3 at home Sunday. Martin Grenier scored his first goal of the season which turned out to be the game-winner for the Wolf Pack at 8:51 of the third period while Robert Nilsson scored two goals and Jeff Hamilton recorded a goal and two assists in the losing effort for the Sound Tigers.
Nilsson scored the first goal of the game at 13:23, his second of the season, off a great pass from Jeff Hamilton for the easy one-time goal. Jeremy Colliton also notched a helper on the play to extend his assist streak to four games and his point streak to five. However, Hartford countered just 35 seconds later when Nigel Dawes scored off a feed from Colby Genoway to make 1-1.
Dwight Helminen gave the Wolf Pack their first lead at 2-1 with a power-play goal off assists from Joe Rullier and Fedor Fedorov with 3:31 left in the opening frame, but Nilsson was able to get the Sound Tigers even at 2-2 just 1:06 later with his second goal of the game and third in two nights taking a great back-door pass from Hamilton with Colliton also assisting on the equalizer.
Action in the second period started early when the Wolf Pack's Ivan Baranka took a tripping penalty 26 seconds into the frame, and Sound Tigers jumped all over the power-play opportunity scoring just 12 seconds later on rocket shot by Hamilton over the shoulder of Hartford goalie Robert Gherson. Cole Jarrett set the play up from the point finding Hamilton at the left circle for the one-time goal, Hamilton's fourth goal of the season. Rob Collins also picked up an assist.
In the third, Evgeny Tunik took a hooking penalty and was also assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct minor to give the Wolf Pack a four-minute power-play at 5:25. Dawes evened the score at 3-3 on the second of the two advantages off assists from Genoway and Helminen at the 8:09 mark. Hartford took the lead for good just 42 seconds later when Grenier pushed a rebound past Sound Tigers netminder Wade Dubielewicz off an from Jarkko Immonen to make it 4-3.
With the Sound Tigers on a power play, Dubielewicz was pulled in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute left in the game, but referee Dean Morton awarded an empty-net, shorthanded goal to Helminen at the 19:14 mark when Collins tossed his stick at the Wolf Pack skater who was on a clear path to score.
Dawes was the first star of the game, Nilsson the second and Hamilton the third. Gherson made 23 saves to earn the win while Dubielewicz took the loss with 28 stops. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 5 on the power play while Hartford was 2 for 5 and had a 33-26 shots on goal advantage.
