Somerset Patriots News Release
Manchester, New Hampshire - The Somerset Patriots (7-4) were lifted by a three-run eighth inning in a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (4-7) Saturday night at Delta Dental Stadium.
Twice trailing in the ballgame, Oswaldo Cabrera (1) hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Four batters later, Dermis Garcia (2) sent a two-out, two-run shot over the right-center field fence to put the Patriots ahead 5-3.
The Patriots trailed 1-0 heading to the sixth inning and again trailed 3-2 into the eighth.
Earlier in the night, both starting pitchers were strong out of the gate. Fisher Cats lefty Zach Logue did not allow a hit through his first 4.1 innings, and finished his night with eight strikeouts over six innings. Patriots righty Luis Gil tossed four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts before he was taken out of the game at 68 pitches.
New Hampshire broke through in the bottom of the fifth on an Austin Martin RBI single. The Patriots responded the next half inning to take the lead on an RBI double from Matt Pita and an RBI single from Cabrera.
But that lead was short-lived. The Fisher Cats regained a 3-2 lead the next half inning on a run-scoring hit-by-pitch and a Nick Podkul sacrifice fly.
After the Patriots regained the lead in the eighth, reliever Reid Anderson struck out the side in the bottom of the inning, and Greg Weissert (S, 1) struck out the side in the ninth to close out the game.
Michael Gomez (W, 2-0) earned the win after he allowed two runs over two innings of relief. Mike Ellenbest (L, 0-1) took the loss after he yielded three runs in one inning of relief.
The Patriots conclude their six-game series in New Hampshire Sunday afternoon. Righty Shawn Semple (0-0, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset against Fisher Cats right-hander Simeon Woods-Richardson (0-0, 2.00 ERA). First pitch at Delta Dental Stadium is set for 1:35 p.m.
