
Solar Bears Sign Akim Aliu

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Solar Bears have announced that the club has signed veteran defenseman Akim Aliu to a Standard Player Contract.
Aliu, 29, skated last season for HC Banska Bystrica, Kalskrona HK and IK Pantern, amassing seven points (2g-5a) and 92 penalty minutes in 21 combined games.
In 559 career pro games, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound blueliner has generated 155 points (80g-75a) and 752 penalty minutes. Aliu's résumé includes seven games with the NHL's Calgary Flames, in which he produced three points (2g-1a) and 26 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 67 career ECHL contests with the Atlanta Gladiators, Florida Everblades, Bakersfield Condors, Colorado Eagles and Toledo Walleye, where he has posted totals of 61 points (26g-35a) and 153 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning pro, the native of Okene, Nigeria played for the London Knights, Sudbury Wolves and Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, where he racked up 167 points (76g-91a) and 407 penalty minutes in 205 games.
Aliu was a second-round selection (#56 overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
