Calgary Vipers News Release

In a continued game from last night the Calgary Vipers defeated the Victoria Seals 6-3 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. Originally it was ruled that last night's game was official after a 20 minute rain delay and eight innings however that was incorrect and the two teams had to complete the contest. The Vipers led from the second inning on and scored single runs in five separate innings. With the victory the Snakes improve to 10-5 on the Golden Baseball League and are a game and a half back in the North Division.

Anastacio Martinez (1-2) made the start for Calgary and threw five and a third innings while allowing only one earned run for the victory. Out of the bullpen Junior Iboa made his season debut and struck out two batters in a hitless inning of work while Claudio Galva (2) recorded the save in picking up the final two outs of the eighth inning with two runners on and also collecting the final three outs in the ninth.

At the plate Luis Taveras and Guillermo Reyes led the charge with Taveras going three-for-five with three runs batted in and two runs scored while Reyes was three-for-six.

Calgary scored first in the second inning when Drew Miller walked to reach base for a 15th straight game, Caonabo Cosme singled, and Luis Taveras made the game 1-0 with a run batted in base hit.

The Vipers doubled their lead in the third frame as Jorge Mejia, Miller, Jonny Kaplan, and Cosme all walked for a 2-0 advantage.

Another lone run was added by Calgary in the fourth as Guillermo Reyes doubled and Mejia singled him home for a 3-0 lead.

Victoria got a tally back in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 score as Wilver Perez singled, stole second base, and scored on a Terrence McClain RBI single.

For the fourth straight inning the Snakes scored a single run as in the fifth frame Kaplan and Cosme walked and after a wild pitch Taveras drove in his second run of the game when he reached on an error.

Again the Seals got within two runs in the sixth at 4-2 as McClain singled, stole second base, moved to third on a groundout by Brian Rios, and scored on a passed ball.

Right back responded the Vipers in the next half inning as Taveras smacked a leadoff home run for a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth Taveras singled, stole his first base of the season, and scored on a Reyes RBI double for a 6-2 score.

Victoria got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Dale Swinford singled and came around to score on two separate throwing errors for a 6-3 final.

The Vipers will now play a seven inning game against the Seals starting at 9:05 PM MDT on Wednesday June 9th. This series in Victoria against the Seals concludes on Thursday June 10th at 8:00 PM MDT.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Saturday June 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday June 12th at 1:35 PM to take Calgary native Colin Moro and the Seals in the back half of this home-and-home series.
