Victoria Seals Sunk By The Vipers

June 9, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Hoping to snap a seven-game losing skid in their return to Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals took on the Calgary Vipers in the first of a three game series on Tuesday night. With the visitors turning to Anastacio Martinez (0-2) for the start, the Seals responded with Aaron Trolia (0-1) in the series opener.

Calgary opened the scoring in the second inning of play when Drew Miller drew a walk before Caonabo Cosme singled, and Luis Taveras cashed in the runner with a fielder's choice. The visitors then doubled their advantage in the third frame with four walks to Jorge Mejia, Miller, Jonny Kaplan, and Cosme loading the bases and then putting the Vipers up 2-0.

With the Seals still remaining scoreless, Guillermo Reyes doubled and Mejia picked up an RBI single to put Calgary up 3-0 in the fourth. Striking right back, however, a base hit from Wilver Perez before a run-scoring base hit courtesy of Terrence McClain pulled the Seals back within two.

Restoring their lead in the next half-inning, Calgary posted a solo run for the fourth straight inning when Taveras drove in his second run of the game when he reached on an error. Victoria would rally again, though using another hit from McClain to set up a stolen base and a pass ball to score the Seals' leading hitter.

Making a statement with another response in the top of the sixth, Taveras factored into the scoring again with a first-pitch leadoff home run for a 5-2 lead. Despite putting runners on in each of the final three innings, Victoria was unable to convert before the skies opened up over Royal Athletic Park. With the steady rain following, the game was called just prior to the ninth inning of play, handing the Seals their 10th loss of the year, a 5-2 final.

Anastacio Martinez was strong on the mound for the Vipers in earning his first win of the season, while Aaron Trolia took his second loss on the year. Two runs batted in for Luis Taveras was the offensive highlight for Calgary, while Terrence McClain stayed hot with a 3-for-4 outing in a losing effort for the Seals.
