Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - It was a wet day for the second annual Home Run Hooky at Telus Field on Sonic Weiner Wednesday, but that didn't put a damper on the spirits of over 3000 students who braved the cold conditions. The energy and excitement provided by the young fans was incredible, even after the game was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions. Spontaneous dancing intermingled with games of 'follow the leader' and a condensed curriculum that taught the students about the history of professional baseball in our city all combined for a fun filled day, albeit a bit damp.
A pregame stretch and a round of Spongebob trivia got the festivities started and from there the crowd was hardly in their seats. A spirited Dance Off between Edmonton Capital and Orange County Flyer players part way through the rain delay also brought some of the loudest cheers of the day. Caps infielders Alex Chavez and Tom Collaro took on all challengers and proved that the Caps could not only best the Orange County Flyers on the field, as they did on Tuesday, but on the dance floor as well. With the large crowd as the judges it proved to be no contest.
While students may not have seen any baseball Wednesday afternoon, all is not lost. Any one with a ticket to Wednesday's game may redeem it for a ticket to any future Capitals home game in the 2010 season. Tickets may be exchanged at the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours between Monday to Friday or on game night later this season.
On Thursday, the Caps will say "Bitaemo" (welcome) to all fans for the first ever Cheemo Ukrainian night. A double header will begin at 6 p.m. with the teams scheduled to play two seven inning games. It will be a great night to come down to the ball park and enjoy the fun and festivities. Ukrainian food and entertainment will be available all night long, while public announcements and player introductions will be done in Ukrainian as well as English.
Friday is also Safeway Fireworks Friday with a free fireworks show after the game.
