July 22, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- David Smith broke open a close game with a three-run home run, and Brett Cecil allowed one run in 5.2 innings to earn his fifth victory as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats topped the Trenton Thunder, 7-2, before a crowd of 3,658 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on a game that began on Tuesday night and ended a few minutes after midnight on Wednesday morning.
Following a 1-hour, 50-minute rain delay before the game, New Hampshire (41-61) jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Jason Jones in the bottom of the first inning when Scott Campbell (2-for-2, 2B, 3 BB, 2 R) and Ryan Patterson (2-for-5, R) led off with consecutive singles. Travis Snider (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB) scored Campbell with a double to left, and Patterson scored on a Brian Jeroloman (1-for-5, RBI, R) ground out.
Trenton (63-38) got one back in the top of the fourth inning when Edwar Gonzalez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) launched his eighth home run of the season off the facing of the hotel in left-centerfield, cutting New Hampshire's lead to 2-1.
The Fisher Cats widened the margin to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning against Jones on a J.P. Arencibia (1-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 R) RBI single and Smith's sixth homer, a three-run blast over the right-centerfield wall.
Jones (10-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings. The Northern Division's starting pitcher in last week's Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game struck out one and walked four in the losing effort.
Cecil (5-2) scattered six hits, allowing one run in the victory. The left-hander struck out six and did not walk a batter, though he did hit two batters.
The Thunder added a run against Orlando Roman in the top of the seventh inning when Roman walked Austin Jackson (2-for-4, BB, RBI) with the bases loaded. Daryl Harang entered in a bases-loaded, no-out situation and induced a pop out from Chris Malec (1-for-3, HBP) before notching back-to-back strikeouts of Colin Curtis (0-for-4) and P.J. Pilittere (0-for-4) to end the threat.
Jean Machi closed it out with two shutout innings, allowing one hit and walking one. Jacob Butler (1-for-4, RBI, BB) grounded an RBI single to score Arencibia in the bottom of the eighth inning, capping the scoring. The run was unearned against Trenton reliever Eric Wordekemper.
For the second straight game, every Fisher Cats starter had at least one hit. Campbell is 5-for-6 in the series with five walks and five runs scored. The Eastern League's leading hitter has reached base safely in eight consecutive plate appearances and 10 times in his 11 trips to the plate, raising his AVG. to .343.
On Wednesday night, left-hander Ricky Romero (5-5, 5.33) will take the mound for the Fisher Cats against Thunder left-hander Chase Wright (8-2, 3.09) in a 7:05pm game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
