Dig for a Diamond in the Diamond
July 22, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
The Bowie Baysox, Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, in partnership with Miss Utility and Time Piece Jewelers will give away a 1 carat* round-cut diamond during the Miss Utility Diamond Dig on Thursday, July 31st. One lucky fan will uncover the diamond with a retail value of over $4,500. The Diamond Dig will occur following the Baysox game against the New Britain Rock Cats. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. (*1 carat approximate weight)
During the game on Thursday, July 31st, fans ages 18 and up will have the chance to win one of the coveted digging spoons in a random drawing on the stadium concourse. Fans will enter the drawing during the game and winners will be announced throughout the night. During the game, 25 fans will be selected to win a spoon and will come onto the field after the game. They will join a group of 25 winners from a radio station contest to form a group of 50 Diamond Diggers.
"Sponsoring the Diamond Dig and working with the Bowie Baysox gives Miss Utility an unprecedented platform to share our safe digging message in a creative way," said Tom Baldwin, Chairman of the Maryland/D.C. Miss Utility Subscribers Committee. "Whether you're digging a small hole in a minor league infield, planting a tree, installing a mailbox or managing a commercial construction project, for safety's sake the first step should always be notifying Miss Utility of your intent to dig."
"This is a unique and fun promotion that we are excited to share with our fans," said Baysox Assistant General Manager Phil Wrye. "The last time the Baysox hosted a Diamond Dig was over 10 years ago." "We know our fans enjoy being on the field, and through this event, they have an opportunity to do that and leave the ballpark with a valuable prize that will give someone a lifetime memory and memento to share with their family and friends."
The diamond will be placed inside of a 35 mm film canister and buried a few inches under the infield dirt before fans enter the ballpark. Following the game, all 50 qualifiers will be brought onto the field. They will get down on their hands and knees with their spoons to dig until one lucky fan finds the canister containing the valuable gemstone.
The Miss Utility Diamond Dig is open to all fans, male and female who are at least 18 years of age. The fans that are selected to participate must be present at the time of the Dig to participate. No substitutions will be allowed.
The diamond is provided by Time Piece Jewelers, located at Free State Mall in Bowie, Maryland and at South River Colony in Edgewater, Maryland.
