Connecticut Defenders News Release
PORTLAND, ME- After a six-run loss on Monday, the Defenders exacted a lengthy revenge on the Portland Sea Dogs as they smacked 18 hits in a 18-6 thrashing on Tuesday.
The Defs weren't interested in getting blown out on Tuesday as the runs began to pile up. After a scoreless first, Connecticut began an offensive avalanche.
In the top of the second, Adam Witter started things off by getting aboard on an error, Eddy Martinez-Esteve walked behind him and Carlos Sosa drew a one-out walk to load the bags. Dave Maroul blooped a single to score Witter, Kyle Haines tapped an RBI groundout to first and Olmo Rosario was hit by a pitch to fill the bags with Defenders. Ben Copeland would send two home on a single as the rally ended with Connecticut ahead, 4-0.
Portland would get one back in the last of the second but Connecticut went right back to work in the fourth. Connecticut sent ten men to the plate in the frame as Copeland's two run double coupled with Pablo Sandoval's three-run homer highlighted a five-run inning for the Defs to make it 9-1.
Portland would battle back in the home half of the fourth as they scored five unearned runs. The defense would make two miscues to allow for the big inning. Through only four innings, the score was 9-6 Connecticut.
Even after indulging in such a large smorgasbord, the Defenders remained hungry at the dish. In the fifth, back-to-back RBI doubles by Rosario and Copeland push the lead to 11-6. Copeland would drive in his sixth run in the seventh on a solo homer as Ryan Rohlinger's run-scoring single later in the inning ballooned the advantage to 13-6.
The eighth was more of the same. Sandoval laced an RBI single and Adam Witter hit a towering two-run bomb as Connecticut commanded a 16-6 lead.
Sandoval didn't like Copeland getting all the attention at the plate. In the ninth, Sandoval mercilessly ripped a two-run double to the alleyway to give him 6 RBIs on the evening and inflated the lead to 18-6.
Broshuis' peculiar five inning, six run allotment (one earned), on five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts proved to be good enough for his eleventh victory. Kris Johnson lost his fifth as he lasted just three and a third before being lifted from the game.
The pitching was overshadowed by enormous offensive production. Ben Copeland roped five hits for the second time during this current road trip and drove in a team-high six runs. Sandoval also sent six men home on three hits and Dave Maroul scored all four times he reached base in six plate appearances.
Connecticut will face off against the Sea Dogs on Wednesday night at 7:00pm as David Ortiz' re-hab stint will continue. Catch every pitch starting with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm on ctdefenders.com or on the Defenders Radio Network.
