New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Trevor Clifton carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and the Iowa Cubs capitalized on three errors by the Baby Cakes to defeat New Orleans, 4-2 on Friday night.
The 'Cakes saw their five-game win streak snapped, and lost for the 10th time in 14 meetings with Iowa this season.
Former Zephyr Chris Coghlan went the opposite way for a home run in the third inning to put Iowa on the board, and the Cubs took advantage of sloppy defense by the Baby Cakes to plate three runs on a single in the fifth.
With runners at first and second and two outs, Mark Zagunis singled through the hole at short to score a run. Austin Dean's throw sailed to pitcher Zac Gallen backing up the plate, but Gallen threw wildly attempting to throw behind the runner at third base, allowing a second run to score, and Zagunis came all the way around to score when Dean overran the ball for a second error.
Clifton (3-2) faced the minimum until two outs in the fifth inning, allowing only a two-out walk to Cristhian Adames in the first. Adames was thrown out attempting to steal second base, and the Baby Cakes did not have another baserunner until Jon Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. The right-hander walked one and struck out five.
Dean finally got New Orleans into the hit column with a two-out single in the sixth, and Isan Diaz and Adames followed with singles to break up the shutout bid.
An inning later, J.B. Shuck drilled a leadoff home run against Anthony Bass to bring the 'Cakes within two, and New Orleans threatened in the ninth when Dillon Maples issued back-to-back walks before recovering to strike out the final two batters and notch his ninth save.
Gallen (7-7) was charged with four runs - two earned - in 4 2/3 innings and took the loss despite racking up eight strikeouts. Gallen's only two defeats in eight starts at home have both come against the I-Cubs.
The 'Cakes and Cubs play the third game of the four-game set on Saturday at 6 p.m.
