Iowa Cubs News Release
METAIRIE, LA - The Iowa Cubs (43-73) returned the favor behind the arm of Trevor Clifton (W, 3-2) while capitalizing on three errors to beat the New Orleans Baby Cakes (55-61), 4-2 Friday evening at Shrine on Airline.
The matchup between PCL American foes began as another pitching duel, as Clifton and right-hander Zac Gallen (L, 7-7) held opposing offenses scoreless till the third.
Chris Coghlan broke the seal with one swing of the bat, as he powered an opposite-field solo shot to right for the game's first run.
The I-Cubs continued to build on Coghlan's second home run of the season, making the most of two errors for a trio of runs in the fifth. Mark Zagunis answered the call, as he singled in Stephen Bruno before the first of two throwing errors brought home Ryan Court. Zagunis capitalized on the Baby Cake miscue while forcing a second throwing error going first to home for a 4-0 game.
Clifton continued to carry Iowa's dominant pitching performance into the second matchup, taking a no-hit bid into the sixth before back-to-back singles from Austin Dean and Isan Diaz signaled his exit after 5.2 innings.
James Norwood relieved Clifton, as the Baby Cakes wasted no time jumping on the board off a Cristhian Adames RBI single to score Dean. Clifton ended his night tagged for one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts, allowing just four base runners over the span.
The Baby Cakes continued to cook up a comeback an inning later, as they cut the deficit in half off a solo shot from JB Shuck for a 4-2 ballgame.
The comeback would fall just short, as the I-Cubs combined to use four bullpen arms to lock down the victory. Dillon Maples answered the bell in the ninth for his second-consecutive appearance in the series. The righty used his slider to strike out the side in his ninth save while bringing his scoreless streak to 23 games.
Both Bruno and Zagunis led the I-Cub offense with multi-hit efforts, collecting two hits apiece. Iowa needed just two RBI, from Zagunis and Coghlan, and two errors to even out the series 1-1 for a 10-4 season record against New Orleans.
Iowa and New Orleans continue the four-game set Saturday at Shrine on Airline at 6 p.m. CT. Catch the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com.
