Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used a three-run eighth-inning home run by Sam Judah to take a lead, but the Joliet Slammers countered with their own three-run blast in the ninth for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.
The Slammers opened the scoring for the first time in the series with a second-inning lead-off home run to left field by Grant DeBruin. The CornBelters tied the contest in the third inning when Jhiomar Veras led off with a double into the right field corner, went to third on a Santiago Chirino single and scored on a double play.
Joliet grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to a lead-off walk to Jose Garcia, who was sacrificed to second and scored on a single to right by Danny Hernandez.
The Belters came through in the eighth inning when Tyler Shover singled to lead off followed by a base hit by Chirino, then Sam Judah hit a first-pitch two-out home run just over the left field wall to put the Belters ahead 4-2.
The Slammers countered with their own three-run, two-out drive, as Jose Garcia hit the eighth pitch of his at bat on a 3-2 count just inside the left field foul pole with the guests down to their final strike to take the lead for good.
Jordan Wellander (3-0) took the win in relief while Alan Oaks (0-2) suffered the loss. Belters starter Mike Devine did not earn a decision despite allowing just one hit, DeBruin's home run, and two walks with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
The series concludes Thursday at the Corn Crib with a 7 p.m. first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Chris Carmain (0-0, 4.50 ERA) matches up against Slammers righty Kody McFarland (2-1, 4.88). Pre-game begins at 6:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . The Belters travel to Traverse City for a three-game series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the Frontier League All-Star Game break, then resume the season with a nine-game home stand beginning Friday, July 18 to start a three-game series with the Frontier Greys.
