
Washington Splits Doubleheader with Crushers

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, split a scheduled twin-bill opposite against their East Division rival the Lake Erie Crushers Wednesday at CONSOL Energy Park. Washington took the first half of the two games set by a score of, 4-1, while the Crushers battled to win the late evening's contest, 3-1.
Washington opened the floodgates in the third inning of the opener, touching home four times en route to their game one victory. A leadoff walk to catcher Jim Vahalik and an error by Lake Erie's defense gave the home team their first run of the night, 1-0. A two-run triple by All-Star outfielder Danny Poma made the score 3-1 in favor of the Wild Things. The Wild Things added their last run of the contest courtesy of an RBI double by Scott Kalmar to make it 4-0.
Lake Erie centerfielder Craig Hertler scored the Crushers lone run on an RBI triple in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Jonathan Kountis earned his career best Frontier League best 17th save to secure the 4-1 victory.
In the second game of the twin-bill, Washington got on the board early again when catcher Maxx Garrett sliced an RBI double to put the Things' on the board 1-0. But, in the top of the sixth the Crushers broke out the lumber to collect three runs on four hits, securing their 3-1 game two victory.
