Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL. (JULY 9, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners could not get their offense going against Windy City starter Daniel Cropper and committed seven errors in the field in an 11-3 loss to the Thunderbolts on Wednesday night at Rent One Park.

The Miners took an early 1-0 lead as JAY AUSTIN led off the first with a single and eventually scored on a groundout by AARON GATES. But Windy City rallied for five runs on just two hits in the third inning, taking the lead for good before piling on six more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 11-1.

Southern Illinois did get a two-run outburst in the ninth with two outs as RYAN CAVAN walked and CHRIS BURKE was hit by a pitch before STEVE MARINO and TYLER BOOTH hit back-to-back RBI singles. The Miners ended up with eight hits in the contest, six of which by Burke, Marino and Booth, but were unable to slow Windy City down in the middle innings en route to just their ninth loss at home this season.

The Miners will turn to MICHAEL CARDEN in the rubber match on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. as they seek the series win in their final home contest before the All-Star break. Jake Fisher will oppose him for the Thunderbolts.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
