Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-were swept in a doubleheader by Normal on Tuesday. They fall 11-3 in game one and 3-2 in 8 innings in game two.
Game one was all CornBelters as they won 11-3. Joliet starter Tyler Bradshaw, making his Slammers debut gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Sam Judah homered in the 2nd inning and other big hits were a 2-run double from Aaron Dudley and RBI double from Richard Lucas. Joliet scored their three runs in the 4th inning on a 2-run homer from Grant DeBruin followed by a solo shot from Adam Giacalone. DeBruin also had a single in the game and and made it a 10-game hitting streak. Other big hits on the day for Normal were a 2-run double from Santiago Chirino and another RBI double from Dudley. Cullin Babin pitched all 7 innings for Normal for the win.
In game two, Joliet's Colin Gotzon made his professional debut as the starting pitcher. He did very well, allowing just solo homers to Mike Schwartz and Aaron Dudley through the first five innings. Meanwhile, the Slammers had back-to-back RBI singles from Giacalone and Marquis Riley in the 5th to tie the game after falling behind. Joliet did leave 11 runners on base in the game. Gotzon allowed the first two batters to reach in the 6th but then retired the next three straight to get out of the jam and keep the game tied going to the 7th. He finished his debut with those two runs allowed in six innings on six hits with three strikeouts. Jordan Wellander pitched scoreless 7th and then Brett Zawacki came on to pitch the 8th. He allowed a leadoff triple to Schwartz so was forced to intentionally walk the next two hitters to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Pat McKenna walked to push across the winning run and end the game 3-2. DeBruin extended his Joliet hitting streak to 11 games and has reached base in 19 of his last 20 games.
The Slammers continue their 8-game road trip on Wednesday at 7pm against the CornBelters. They conclude the series in Normal on Thursday at 7pm before opening a series on Schaumburg on Friday night.
