LOVES PARK, Ill. - Gateway designated hitter Michael Wing capped a four-run eighth inning with a two-run double to help the Grizzlies pick up a 7-6 comeback win Wednesday afternoon against Rockford at Aviators Stadium.
Down 6-3 with two outs and two runners on base in the eighth inning, Niko Vasquez and Richard Seigel each collected RBI singles and Wing brought in the tying and leading run on a double to right field.
The win helped push the Grizzlies (32-16) lead in the West Division to three and a half games over River City.
Rockford (21-24) scored three runs in the second inning against Gateway starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West to take a 3-0 lead. Tyger Pederson drove in a run on a double and Ryan Breen brought in two runs on his first career home run.
A three-run fourth inning for Gateway tied the game at three. Wing led off the inning with a solo home run and Madison Beaird drove in two runs on a double.
Wing finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs batted in.
Rockford pushed across a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to remove West from the game.
The 24-year-old right-hander from Atlanta, Mo. allowed six runs and nine hits in six and two thirds innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Luke Westphal (1-2) notched his first professional win. The left-hander pitched one and a third scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Gateway closer Richard Barrett pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 11th save of the season.
