River City Rascals News Release

A crazy game that included three ejections and a line of heckling from the T.R. Hughes crowd ended with heartbreaking defeat for the Rascals, as they lost 7-6 to the Schaumburg Boomers.

After an eight-game roadtrip, the Rascals came home for the first game of a three-game series against the third-place Schaumburg Boomers. Brook sent right-handed rookie Ben Bracewell to the mound to counter the veteran righty Seth Webster.

The first inning was scoreless and relatively uneventful other than the ejection of Rascals first-baseman Saxon Butler by the inexperienced umpire Matt Deane- who threw Butler out earlier this season showing both his short fuse and temperamental personality as a Frontier League umpire.

The Boomers then took the first lead of the game on a one-out RBI single by first-baseman Brian McConkey- making the score 1-0 Schaumburg after one-and-a-half. The Rascals third-baseman, Bryan Aanderud- who took over for ejected Saxon Butler- then left the ballgame in the top of the third as he was hit with a shard from a broken-bat foul ball. An RBI double by Mark Nelson in the same inning then made the score 2-0 Schaumburg heading into the bottom of inning number three at T.R. Hughes.

River City then came back with offense of their own in the bottom of the third on a double by Hector Crespo that was mishandled by centerfielder Alexi Colon, allowing Crawford to score from first. A sacrifice-fly by Rascals shortstop Johnny Morales later in the inning would then score Crespo- tying the game at two apiece. Following the sac-fly, River City would have four hits and a walk, including a three-run homer by Taylor Ard and an RBI double by Curran Redal, to make it 6-2 after three in O'Fallon.

The score would then remain 6-2 until the top of the fifth when Schaumburg leftfielder Justin Vasquez hit a two-run shot into the leftfield bleachers to make it a two-run game. Following the home run and a hit-by-pitch, Bracewell's night would come to its conclusion after 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out three and walking four. Later in the inning, a disputed homerun by Brian McConkey put the Boomers up 7-6- which led to the ejection of River City manager Steve Brook and reliever Ethan Carter.

A later injury to Josh Ludy running to first removed him from the game and further sent the lineup into chaos as Tommy Mendoza took over at first with Kometani coming in to catch. Even with all of the drama, however, no further runs would come across through eight- keeping the score 7-6 Boomers.

Then, with the Rascals down by one heading into the bottom of the ninth, Schaumburg sent closer Dexter Price in to close out his 11th save of the season and help Schaumburg win game one by a score of 7-6. The win went to reliever Anthony Smith with the loss going to reliever Ethan Carter.

Game two will begin tomorrow night at 7:05pm CT with coverage beginning with the Rascals Pregame Show at 6:45pm CT. Get your tickets by visiting www.rivercityrascals.com or by calling (636)-240-BATS.
