Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

On a night the sky remained lit up with severe weather in the distance, the Sky Sox lit up the scoreboard, blowing out Tucson 21-5 Tuesday night at Security Service Field in front of 5,169 fans.

Mike McCoy led off the game with an inside-the-park home run and Colorado Springs never stopped scoring. The leadoff hitter added a second solo shot in the fourth inning and finished the evening with five RBI. But his night may have been overshadowed by the performances of his teammates.

Matt Miller, who came into the game with three RBI on the season for the Sox, went 4-for-5 with two doubles and recorded a Sky Sox season-high six RBI.

Joe Koshansky added to his list of achievements in 2008 by hitting for the cycle during his 4-for-5 performance. It marked the second time this season that the slugging first baseman has recorded the feat this season, making him the only player in the 21-year history of the Sky Sox to hit for the cycle twice in his career. His three-run home run in the seventh inning also pushed him across the 100 RBI plateau this season, placing him fifth on the Sky Sox single-season RBI list at 102. He also tied a Sky Sox single game record by scoring five runs.

Doug Bernier added three hits in his five at-bats, crossing the plate five times himself while Christian Colonel also added three hits, including a his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning.

Josh Hall (2-2) took advantage of the big lead and breezed through his seven innings of work. He allowed just one run on seven hits and walked none. The only blemish on his line came in the sixth inning when Josh Whitesell took the Sky Sox starter deep for his 23 home run of the season.

Matt Torra (3-4) took the loss after tossing four innings. He gave up nine runs - eight earned - and allowed 12 hits.

The Sidewinders bullpen didn't fare much better, allowing a combined 11 runs and 12 hits in the final four innings, with the last inning being pitched by catcher Frank Curreri (1 inning, five hits, three runs.)

The 21 runs marks the most runs scored by the Sky Sox since June 7, 2007 against Tacoma when they plated 23 runners. The 24 hits also represents a season-high, the most the team has had since 2007 when they knocked 24 hits against Tacoma on June 7.

The same two teams will meet again Wednesday with a 7:05 MDT game. Jason Hirsh (3-3, 5.33) will try to make it two in a row and give the Sky Sox their fifth win in six tries on this home stand. Meanwhile, A.J. Shappi (1-4, 5.53) will try to slow down a Sky Sox offense that has scored 59 runs in the first six games of the home stand.
