Hot Bats Give Tucson Series Win Over Tacoma

Tucson, AZ - Hot bats by the Sidewinders helped them secure a 9-4 win and the series over Tacoma on Monday night. Tucson was able to score nine runs off of fifteen hits in the game.

Tucson had two Major League rehabbers play for them in the game. Justin Upton made his Sidewinders debut at designated hitter and went 2-for-5 with two singles, a run and a strike out. Doug Slaten pitched one inning of relief for the Sidewinders and struck out the side on 12 pitches, 10 of which were strikes.

Tucson scored in the first two innings of the game and did not look back. They scored one run in the first inning off a Jesus Merchan RBI double and Trent Oeltjen scored two when he hit a line drive single to left field in the second. The Sidewinders extended their lead in the fourth inning when Frank Curreri brought in Donnie Kelly with double to right.

Tucson had a five run seventh inning after Denny Stark replaced Jorge Sosa for the Rainiers. Merchan and Phil Avlas brought in two of the runs with singles to center and left respectively. Wilkin Castillo brought in Upton for his only run of the game on a sacrifice fly. While Donnie Kelly had a two RBI triple that hit off the wall in center scoring Merchan and Robby Hammock.

Tacoma scored two runs in the fifth inning off a Prentice Redman double. He did it again in the ninth inning with another two RBI double to left. Redman brought in all four of Tacoma's runs against Tucson.

The Sidewinders will travel to Colorado Springs to play the Sky Sox in a four game series starting on Tuesday at 6:05 PM. RHP Matt Torra (3-3, 2.70) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Josh Hall (1-2, 5.00) will start for the Sky Sox. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:55 p.m.
