June 20, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
Fort Mill, SC - Manager Joel Skinner, who led the Charlotte Knights to the 2012 Governors' Cup finals in his first season at the helm, has been named as a coach for the International League All-Star Team in Reno, Nevada on July 17, 2013. Joining Skinner on the coaching squad is Knights hitting coach Brandon Moore, who has also been named to the All-Star team.
Earlier today, the International League, in conjunction with the Pacific Coast League, announced the entire staff, which also features Dave Miley (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) as the IL manager. The game will be broadcast live on the MLB Network.
Skinner, 52, guided the Knights to an 83-61 record last season -- the second highest win total in a season for the Knights. The former Major League catcher is in his second season with the Knights and 10th as a professional manager.
As a manager, Skinner began his career in 1995 with Watertown (Single-A) and led the club to a New York Penn League Championship. For his efforts that season, he was named Manager of the Year. Two years later, the La Jolla, CA native was Manager of the Year again - this time after he led Kinston (A) to an 87-53 finish.
A year later (1998), Skinner was named USA Today Baseball Weekly's Minor League Manager of the Year after guiding Double-A Akron to an Eastern League division title. In 2000, Skinner led the Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A) to an 86-59 record and his club went all the way to the Governors' Cup Finals that season. At the end of the year, he was named International League, Baseball America, and The Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year.
Skinner was Cleveland's interim manager in 2002 and finished the season with a 35-41 record. He later returned to the Indians as a coach, where he spent 2003-2009. He made his return to managing in 2010 at Double-A Akron and went 71-71. He spent the 2011 season as bench coach of the Oakland A's.
Skinner is the son of former Major League player and manager Bob Skinner, who played 12 seasons in the Majors.
Moore, a native of Birmingham, AL, is in his first season as hitting coach for the Knights and sixth in the White Sox system as a coach. The Auburn University product spent the 2012 season as the hitting coach for his hometown Birmingham Barons (Double-A). Under his guidance, the Barons led the Southern League in walks (561) and finished second in runs scored (629). Moore began his coaching career in 2001 with Bristol (A).
Moore played seven seasons in the White Sox system, including two at the Triple-A level with the Charlotte Knights. A 17th round selection of the White Sox in the 1994 draft, Moore played for the Knights in 1999 and 2000.
