PawSox Get Another Shutout of Columbus
June 20, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Right-hander Brandon Workman collaborated with two relievers to pitch the Pawtucket Red Sox to their second shutout in a four-game series sweep of the Columbus Clippers, winning Thursday's finale, 3-0, before 9,080 at Huntington Park.
The combined five-hitter gave Pawtucket its third series sweep overall and first since beating Gwinnett in four straight road contests from May 6-May 9. And as their fifth straight victory, it lifted the 44-28 PawSox to 16 wins above .500 for the first time since June 21, 2012.
In the top of the first inning, the Sox turned a leadoff walk of Jackie Bradley Jr. into a 2-0 lead off Columbus lefty T.J. House (L, 1-7).
Bradley drew the base on balls on four pitches, before Jonathan Diaz moved him to second with a groundout. Mitch Maier followed with an RBI single, before scoring on Alex Hassan's double.
Another leadoff walk led to another Pawtucket run in the fifth inning. In the lineup at catcher for the first time since June 5, Alberto Rosario reached in front of Bradley, who was hit by House's next pitch. Diaz laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, enabling Maier to bring home Rosario with a grounder to shortstop.
Meanwhile, the Clippers squandered several opportunities in the early innings against Workman (W, 2-1) in falling for the 22 time in their last 28 games. They had the leadoff batter reach each of the first four innings and twice had two on with none out, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and hit into two double plays.
Workman retired 11 of his last 12 batters faced. While yielding just four hits, he struck out five, the last of which resulted from a 94-m.p.h. fastball in his seventh and final inning.
Workman was relieved by Clayton Mortensen, who reported to Pawtucket on an injury rehab assignment for the Red Sox after suffering a right groin strain earlier this month. Mortensen completed a 19-pitch eighth inning, including a walk and strikeout.
Jeremy Kehrt (S, 1) completed the shutout by overcoming a one-out single in his fourth overall outing for the PawSox and first since late April, following nine straight appearances for Double-A Portland.
Pawtucket continues its eight-day swing through Ohio with a 7 p.m. encounter Friday at Toledo. Steven Wright (3-4, 4.60) is scheduled to make the start for the PawSox opposite Derek Hankins (2-3, 3.13).
