Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- After Pawtucket Red Sox closer Anthony Carter suffered his first blown save, battery mate Dan Butler picked him up with a solo homer in the 10th inning of a 6-5 victory over the Columbus Clippers in front of 8,858 at Huntington Park.
In the lineup at catcher for the second straight night after Ryan Lavarnway was recalled by Boston, Butler drilled an 0-2 pitch from Bryan Price into the left-field stands for his fourth home run.
As the sixth pitcher for Columbus, Price (L, 0-1) started the 10th after Ezequiel Carrera led off the last of the ninth with a towering blast off Carter. Carrera's fourth homer, pulled to straight-away right field, marked the first time that Carter could not convert in 11 save opportunities.
Carter eventually left with two on and two out, giving way to lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith, who escaped the threat by inducing a first-pitch groundout. Rowland-Smith (W, 5-0) then overcame a bases-loaded bind in the bottom of the 10th, striking out ex-PawSox Jeremy Hermida looking, to preserve the advantage.
For the second straight night, Columbus went down in its final at-bat with the bases full. Meanwhile, Pawtucket recorded its fourth consecutive victory and clinched the season series by winning for the fifth time in seven meetings.
The Sox fell behind 4-0, as Clipper center fielder Tim Fedroff drove in three runs at the expense of starter Terry Doyle. Fedroff homered in the second and delivered a two-run single in the third inning.
But Pawtucket halved the deficit on RBI singles by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Drew Sutton in the fifth. Bradley, who doubled twice, and Sutton had three hits and two RBI apiece.
Sutton drove in his second run on a double to score Bradley in the seventh, tying the contest at 4-4. As for Bradley's second RBI, it resulted from his next trip to the plate.
As the fourth of six Columbus pitchers, Chris Jakubauskas walked the bases loaded in the eighth inning before giving way to Jerry Gil with one out. Bradley took a 3-2 pitch out of the zone for another base on balls to force in the go-ahead run.
An inning later Carrera connected off Carter, setting up Butler's blast and Rowland-Smith's high wire act. In all, four PawSox relievers totaled six innings, combining with Doyle to strike out 16 and strand 13 Clippers.
Along with Sutton and Bradley, Butler and Alex Hassan, who had two doubles, enjoyed multi-hit performances for Pawtucket.
The series concludes Thursday at 7:05 p.m., as the PawSox reach the midpoint of their eight-day road trip in Ohio. They'll start play at 43-28, a season-high 15 games above the .500 mark.
