Louisville Bats News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - Louisville (36-38) dropped the finale of their four-game series with Durham (47-27) by a score of 2-1 Thursday night. The Bats failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position for the second straight game as Matt Buschmann (W, 2-0) threw five scoreless innings.
One night removed from stranding 11 base runners, the Bats left eight on and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Bulls pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts. Louisville starter Armando Galarraga (L, 5-5) worked through some tight spots as well, holding the Bulls to a 2-for-9 night with runners in scoring position. Galarraga lasted six innings while allowing two runs on eight hits.
Billy Hamilton led off the game with a single to right field. Hamilton took second base on the next pitch for his league-leading 46th stolen base of the season. Eleven of Hamilton's 46 steals have come off the Durham Bulls. Louisville would get three base runners in the inning, but wouldn't get a run on the board.
Durham struck first in the bottom half of the inning. Vince Belnome hit a two-out double before scoring on a single by Shelley Duncan.
The Bulls would get the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the second. Henry Rodriguez fielded a ground ball at third. He stepped on the bag then threw home to get the 5-2 double play. Galarraga got out of the inning unscathed, getting a fly out for the third out.
The Durham lead remained at one until the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Roberts singled to score Brandon Guyer and increase the lead to two. Belnome then hit his second double of the game to put Galarraga in another jam. Galarraga issued an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. The move would pay off as Galarraga escaped the inning with no further damage.
Juan Sandoval relieved Buschmann in the top of the sixth. After a perfect inning, Sandoval gave up a lead-off double to Jason Donald in the seventh. A pair of ground outs scored Donald, giving the Bats their first run of the game, and cutting the Durham lead in half.
Logan Ondrusek took over the Louisville pitching duties in the seventh. Ondrusek struck out two Bulls on his way to a 1-2-3-inning.
Steve Geltz (S, 3) entered the game in the ninth to close things out for Durham. For the second straight night, Louisville would get the tying run on base in the ninth inning. Nevin Ashley grounded out to end the game and the road trip.
The Bats return home for eight games at Louisville Slugger Field with the first four coming against the Rochester Red Wings. RHP Greg Reynolds (8-0, 2.45) will look to stay perfect against RHP Cole De Vries (2-2, 9.43) at 7:05. The first 2,000 fans tomorrow night will receive a free 2013 Louisville Bats Team Photo. Jake the Diamond Dog will also make an appearance.
