June 20, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

TONIGHTfS GAME: The Red Wings bid to reach the .500 mark was denied by Scranton/WB for the second time in three nights as the RailRiders knocked off the Wings 10-7 Wednesday in the series opener... Tonight, the Wings send RHP Kyle Gibson to the hill looking to earn a split of this two-game set and get back to within one-game of the .500 mark... Despite the loss, Rochester has still won six of their last eight games and 12 of 18 overall... The Wings are currently just 3.0 games back of Lehigh Valley in the Wild Card and 8.5 games behind Pawtucket in the North... Meanwhile, the RailRiders, after jumping out to a 17-11 record, have gone just 15-28 since May 6 and currently sit in 5th place in the IL North -- 11.0 GB of the Paw Sox... ¨QUITE THE TRIP: Next, the Wings will hit the road for a 10-game trip beginning in Louisville on Friday night. The trip also includes four games in Indianapolis and two games in Syracuse... It is the longest scheduled road trip for the Wings since a 10-game, 11-day trip from May 20-30, 2006 and first 10-game trip with no off day since June 3-12, 2004... Later this season, the Wings will embark on an 11-game, 12-day trip from 8/5-8/16.

GET THIS GUY TO RENO: With three more hits and four more RBI (tied for career-high) on Wednesday, Red Wings shortstop Doug Bernier continues to make a case to be the starting shortstop for the IL squad at the 2013 Triple-A All-Star Game in Reno, NV next month... Not only is Bernier the best defensive shortstop in the league (IL-best .987 fielding percentage), but he has the T-3rd best average (.285) among all eligible IL shortstops, T-5th most HR (3) and T-1st most RBI (35) among IL SSfs... Bernierfs 35 RBI are second on the team (Colabello, 53) and already the 3rd-highest total of his career... He hit his 3rd home run of the season in his 195th at-bat last Thursday night. Prior to this year, Bernier had hit just one long ball in 892 ABfs over the past four seasons in the IL... Earlier this month, Bernier had his first 9-G hit streak since the 2005 season w/ Tulsa (AA).

¨In June, Bernier is batting .361 (22-for-61) with 11 XBH (7 2B, 3 3B, HR), 16 runs and 14 RBI in 18 games.

HERRMANN HEATING UP: Red Wings C/OF Chris Herrmann extended his hit streak to a tied for career-high 10 games on Wednesday with a 9th inning double... The 10-game streak is the second longest by a Red Wings player this season behind Chris Colabellofs 16-gamer... Over the streak, Herrmann is hitting .371 (13-for-35) with 4 XBH, 7 runs and 4 RBI... His streak dates back to May 21 as he spent 2.5 weeks in the Big Leagues (while Trevor Plouffe was on the disabled list) going 6-for-13 with a homer and 4 RBI in 7 games -- his second career Major League stint.

¨In the Clutch: With the Wings, Herrmann is hitting .357 (25-70) from the 6th inning on... Just .184 (19-103) prior to 6th.

YOUNG GUNS IN THE BULLPEN: The Wings bullpen has been much improved of late posting a 3.69 ERA (28 ER/68.1 IP) while converting 9 of 10 save chances over the last 24 games over which the team has gone 16-8... Prior to this nice stretch the bullpenfs ERA was 6.16 on the season. A large reason for the turnaround in the relief corps has been the additions on Aaron Thompson, Michael Tonkin and Blake Martin from Double-A New Britain. The trio has combined to post a 1.13 ERA (4 ER/32.0 IP) while converting 6 of 7 save chances in 22 appearances... Tonkin earned his 3rd Triple-A save on Tuesday and has yet to allow an earned run over his first eight Triple-A appearances with the Wings. The 6-7, 200-pound right-hander has struck out 8 and walked none in his first 9.0 innings while holding lefties hitless against him (0-for-12)... Meanwhile, Martin has allowed just one hit (1-for-21) over his first 7.0 scoreless innings in four appearances with Rochester.

GIBSON GOING GOOD: The Wings will hand the ball to RHP Kyle Gibson on Thursday night who has won his last four decisions and now owns 6 wins on the year -- T-4th most in the IL... Over his last six starts, Gibby is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA (12 ER/42.0 IP) and 5 quality starts... The combination of Andrew Albers and Gibson are 12-7 with a 3.13 ERA (58 ER/166.2 IP) this season... The rest of the Red Wings starters are 12-17 with a 5.02 ERA while the other three starters in the Wings current rotation are 5-9 with a 6.63 ERA (67 ER/91.0 IP)... The duo has won their last 10 decisions over 13 combined starts while recording two complete-game shutouts and posting 10 quality starts. The last loss for either hurler was Gibsonfs May 14 loss vs DUR.

MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT...:

¨The Wings bid to win their season-high 5th straight home game and reach the .500 mark for the first time all season was denied.

¨The Wings yielded a tied for season-high 4 HR for the 3rd time this season -- all have come at Frontier Field.

¨The Wings failed to hit a home run in a season-high 4th straight game on Wednesday night -- a span of 35 innings.

¨Jeff Clementfs 8th inn. error snapped the Wings season-high streak of 4 games w/o committing an error -- a span of 42 innings.

ROSTER MOVES: RHP Liam Hendriks was activated off the DL (elbow) Wednesday and allowed 7 runs on 9 hits in 4.0 innings in his first start since May 9... To make room for Hendriks, RHP Virgil Vasquez was transferred to Double-A. Vasquez was 2-6 with a 5.28 ERA (34 ER/58.0 IP) in 15 G (10 starts) with the Wings. He allowed 11 home runs in 58.0 innings.
