Altoona Curve News Release
Curve, Pa. - The Altoona Curve defeated the Binghamton Mets, 6-5, Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field and snapped their winless drought which lasted ten games. Elias Diaz went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Altoona's first win since May 24 in the first game of the doubleheader in Erie.
The B-Mets plated two runs in the second inning off of Curve starter Joely Rodriguez. Dustin Lawley hit an RBI double and later scored in the frame on a throwing error by the Curve defense.
Altoona struck to within one in the bottom half of the inning. Justin Howard led off the frame with a single and advanced to third on a double by Willy Garcia. With two runners in scoring position, Matt Curry hit a deep fly ball to center that turned into an RBI double, plating Howard from third.
In the fifth, Altoona scored four runs to take the lead and then some. Curry led off the fifth with a double and Drew Maggi later reached on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Alen Hanson clubbed his league-best sixth triple to center which scored Curry and Maggi. After Keon Broxton drew a walk, Diaz hit a two-run double to give the Curve a 5-2 lead.
Binghamton struck for two runs in the seventh inning off of the Curve bullpen to cut the lead down to one, but the Curve added an insurance run in the eighth. After Diaz started the inning with a single and advanced to third on an error, the Curve catcher scored his first run of the game on an RBI sac fly by Garcia to give Altoona a 6-4 lead.
In the ninth, Binghamton created some drama for the Curve. After Matt Clark drew a leadoff walk, he later scored on an RBI single by Matt Reynolds but Quinton Miller struck out pinch hitter Rylan Sandoval with the go-ahead run on base to end the Curve ten-game skid.
Rodriguez (3-4) earned the win for Altoona after he hurled his fourth quality start of the season. The 22-year-old threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. B-Mets starter Hansel Robles (3-3) took the loss. Quinton Miller earned his second save of the season.
