Skeeters Falter Late in Game One of Doubleheader

(SUGAR LAND, Texas) - The Sugar Land Skeeters surrendered seven runs in the seventh inning as they lost 10-2 to the Tacoma Rainiers in the opener of a Sunday doubleheader at Constellation Field.

The Rainiers scored all seven runs in the ninth with two outs. Francis Martes began the inning and allowed five runs through 1 2/3 innings, walking four batters. Colin McKee came on in relief of Martes and allowed two runs through 1/3 of an inning.

The Skeeters made it a 3-2 game in the fifth inning on a two-run double from Jake Meyers, scoring Ronnie Dawson and Miguelangel Sierra. Meyers has driven in 25 runs over his last 20 games.

Right-hander Brett Conine started the game and allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five through five innings. He received the losing decision. Rainiers starter Ian McKinney received the win after tossing five innings and allowing two runs on two hits.

Tacoma struck with a run in the first on an RBI single from Jose Godoy. The Rainiers added two more in the fourth inning on a single from Jantzen Witte. Jose Marmolejos provided they key blow in the seventh, with a three-run home run.

The Skeeters and Rainiers are set to play the second game of their doubleheader Sunday night at Constellation Field.
