Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.-Scoring six times in the bottom of the third provided Aaron Brooks and the Kane County Cougars with enough offense as they waltzed to a 9-5 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Tim Ferguson kicked off the third-inning rally as he punched out his third home run of the season by lining a ball off the foul pole down the left field line to start the frame. Kenny Swab followed with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly off the bat of Alex Llanos. Julio Aparicio singled home a run in front of a two-run double from Michael Antonio. Ferguson also finished the rally by knocking home Antonio with a single.
In the fourth, the Cougars (48-46, 14-10) continued to pour on the runs as Yowill Espinal and Alex Llanos singled to set up Danny Mateo with one out. Mateo singled to center while the ball skipped by center fielder Chad Wright allowing Espinal, Llanos and Mateo to all score, giving the home team a 9-1 advantage over the Whitecaps (48-46, 12-12).
West Michigan added a couple runs in the sixth off starter Aaron Brooks (7-9), who lasted six innings while surrendering six hits. Cody Fassold coughed up two more in the seventh before Malcom Culver and Mike Giovenco combined for the final seven outs. Marcelo Carreno (4-7) started for the Whitecaps and didn't give up a hit until the third inning but didn't last past the third inning.
The Cougars are at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday when they take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:05 p.m. You can listen to the broadcast on www.kccougars.com, beginning with Cougars on Deck at 6:50 p.m. Right-hander Kellen Moen (3-6) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Jake Floethe (8-1).
