Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The LumberKings had an opportunity to sweep an opponent for only the second time this year but came up short again as they were trounced by South Bend, 10-4, on Monday morning at Ashford University Field.
Clinton has won the first two games of a three-game series seven times this year and has only completed the three-game sweep one time, against Beloit, on June 28-30.
Five days after twirling the 21st no-hitter in Clinton baseball history, Jordan Shipers (4-4) was roughed up. The left-hander allowed eight runs on nine hits and was pulled in the third inning after he allowed his second two-run homer of the game. Chris Ellison hit a two-run shot into the Lumber Lounge in a four-run second inning for the Hawks and Eric Groff hit a blast down the left field line with Roidany Aguila a board to make it 8-0 in the third.
The LumberKings got good relief work from David Colvin and Jeremy Dobbs as the two combined to throw 6 1/3 innings. They each allowed one run and Dobbs' tally was unearned.
The bats were awake as Clinton pounded out 11 hits but left 12 runners on base. Dillon Hazlett and Ji-Man Choi each had three hits and Choi drove in three runs as well.
Andrew Barbosa started for South Bend but couldn't get through five innings after being staked to the 8-0 lead. The left-hander struck out eight batters but was pulled after Ramon Morla's run-scoring single made it 8-3 in the fifth. Matt Sample (4-1), Kaleb Fleck and Jake Barrett combined for 4 2/3 innings of one-run baseball for the Hawks.
Clinton ended the home stand with three wins and three losses and set out on a six-game road trip to Dayton, Ohio and Bowling Green, Kentucky. The team will use the off day on Tuesday to travel east and begin the three-game set against Dayton on Wednesday night. The LumberKings send right-hander Trevor Miller (5-6, 3.65) to face the Dragons' right-hander Stalin Gerson (4-6, 4.42). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 central time.
