Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Tyrell Jenkins went five shutout innings for his first win since April 23 to help his team stop a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons Monday night at Dow Diamond in Midland, Mich.

Center fielder Nick Martini had two hits and three RBIs, and David Medina came off the bench to provide a double and solo home run and scored two runs for the River Bandits (13-11 second half, 48-45 overall), who have taken one of three games in each of their first six series against Midwest League Eastern Division opponents this season.

In his longest start since coming off the disabled list June 27, Jenkins (2-3) allowed two hits - his fewest since May 1 - while walking three batters and striking out two. He also picked off two Loons base runners. In the first inning, Jenkins got shortstop Darnell Sweeney at first base after Sweeney's leadoff single. In the second, Jenkins walked third baseman Jeffrey Hunt but later picked Hunt off of second base to end the inning. Hunt appeared to injure his hand on the play and was removed from the game.

For the third straight game at Great Lakes, the River Bandits scored in the first inning. Martini hit a one-out double to right field and scored when left fielder Anthony Garcia came just short of a home run with a two-out double off the top of the left-field wall.

In the second inning, Quad Cities loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit by pitch, as right fielder Roberto Reyes was hit by a pitch from right-hander Arismendy Ozoria (6-5), who allowed six hits and two runs in three innings. With two outs, Martini hit a ground ball off the glove of first baseman O'Koyea Dickson for an RBI single and a 2-0 Quad Cities lead.

Medina replaced Reyes in right field in the bottom of the second inning and doubled to center field in his first at-bat leading off the fourth. Medina went to third base on a fly out to right field by shortstop Matt Williams and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Martini that made it 3-0. In the sixth inning, Medina added a solo home run out of the ballpark to right field that extended the lead to 4-0.

Great Lakes (11-13, 45-49) got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning against left-handed reliever Jonathan Cornelius. Sweeney was hit by a pitch, went to third base on a single by right fielder Joe Winker and scored on a balk by Cornelius. A wild pitch moved Winker to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Dickson, cutting the River Bandits' lead to 4-2. Cornelius went 3 1/3 innings in relief.

The River Bandits added two runs in the eighth inning, as Williams hit a bases-loaded single against right-hander Juan Noriega. Left-hander Daniel Coulombe then entered to face Martini, who put down a bunt to the first-base side for his third RBI.

Right-hander Heath Wyatt entered with two runners on and one out in the ninth. He got two outs around a hit batter for his 14th save.

Quad Cities has an off day Tuesday before six home games against Eastern Division opponents. The Lake County Captains visit Modern Woodmen Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when right-hander Sam Gaviglio (5-6) is set to face Captains left-hander Shawn Morimando (3-2).
