Portland Sea Dogs News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (7-4) were held to just one hit through the first five innings, but exploded for six runs in the sixth and beat the Binghamton Mets (7-4) 9-4, Monday night at Hadlock Field. The win marks the fourth in five games on the home stand.

Binghamton's Greg Peavey had allowed just one hit, and retired 10 straight Sea Dogs, but was greeted by a leadoff double off the bat of Mookie Betts in the sixth. Deven Marrero and Travis Shaw worked walks against the righty before Carlos Rivero hit a sac fly that brought home Betts, pulled the 'Dogs to within one at 4-3, and ended the night for Peavey (0-1).

Adam Kolarek was called upon first out of the bullpen for the B-Mets and faced the red-hot Stefan Welch. The first baseman hit a missile to the wall in left-center field that scored Marrero and Shaw, which gave Portland the lead for good a 5-4.

The inning continued against Kolarek with RBI singles from Blake Swihart and Sean Coyle. Peter Hissey capped off the six-run inning with an RBI infield single to second that scored Coyle and made it 8-4 Sea Dogs.

Robby Scott took the lead and cruised through the seventh inning in perfect fashion, his second perfect frame in a row. Scott (1-0) continued to deal in the eighth, but gave up a one out single to Matt Clark, that broke up a personal stretch of 20 hitters in a row. Miguel Celestino took over for the southpaw in the eighth and finished the game without yielding a run.

The final Portland run came courtesy of a Betts single in the eighth that plated Coyle and made it 9-4 in favor of the home team.

Henry Owens took the hill for Portland in his first home start of the young season and started sharply with two and two-third more scoreless innings, which upped his total to 15 and one-third scoreless to begin 2014.

Owens was staked an early 2-0 lead courtesy of a Coyle two-run, Maine Monster shot off Peavey in the second inning.

Binghamton wasn't fazed by the Red Sox' top pitching prospect and battled back with two down in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Kyle Johnson worked a walk to begin the rally and was brought home on a mammoth 2-run home run off the bat of veteran infielder Brian Burgamy, his fourth of the year. After a double to Kevin Plawecki, it was Matt Clark, another veteran, who put one over the wall in right-center for a two-run shot that gave Binghamton the lead.

Owens regrouped and finished five innings. He allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits, he walked three and struck out four. Scott earned the win in relief with two and one third scoreless and three strikeouts.

Peavey was done after five and one-third and gave up five runs, all earned, on just two hits; he walked four and struck out seven. Kolarek backed him up for an inning and two-thirds and was responsible for three runs, all earned, which he gave up on four hits.

The Sea Dogs continue the home stand on Tuesday night with game two of three in a series against the Binghamton Mets at 6:00 PM. Righty Keith Couch (2-0, 0.00) will get the nod for the Sea Dogs and will face off against B-Mets righty Matt Bowman (1-0, 1.80).
