Thunder Strikes at Canal Park as RubberDucks Lose, 2-0
April 14, 2014 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, OH) April 14, 2014 - Trenton righthander Bryan Mitchell struggled through a pair of losses to open the season, but on Monday night at Canal Park the righthander showed the talent that has made him one of the top pitching prospects in the Yankees minor league system.
Mitchell, 22, fanned a career-high, 12 Akron hitters in six innings of work Monday, leading the Thunder to a 2-0 win over the RubberDucks before 1,852 rain-soaked fans in downtown Akron.
The RubberDucks hitters managed just four, harmless singles off of Mitchell (1-2), who used his lethal combo of a 96- mile-per-hour fastball and sharp breaking ball to baffle all comers. Mitchell, in his first full season at Double-A, walked two hitters in the game, and left after striking out three batters in the sixth. He threw 87 pitches, 58 of which were strikes.
Trenton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler Austin laced a two-out, two-run single to left off Gabriel Arias (1-1). Arias had retired the first two hitters, but then issued a walk to Rob Segedin and gave up a double to Kyle Roller prior to Austin's hit.
Arias gave up nothing further, and lasted four innings. He allowed just five hits. Righthander Duke von Schamann picked up after Arias left and tossed five impressive innings of hitless relief for Akron. He needed only 43 pitches to complete his five innings. Von Schamann retired the first 10 batters he faced before issuing a walk to Ben Gamel in the eighth.
Trenton (6-5) got relief help from Manny Barreda and Diego Moreno. Moreno worked the final two innings to post his second save of the season.
It was the first shutout loss of the season for the RubberDucks, and their fewest hits in a game. Tyler Holt had two of Akron's four hits on the night. Francisco Lindor and Tyler Naquin had the other two in the first and third innings, respectively. Both Naquin and Lindor stole second after their hits.
Akron's staff ERA dropped to 2.80, tops in the EL.
The RubberDucks (5-6) will continue the series on Tuesday evening at 6:35, when they will play game two against the Thunder. LHP Jeremy Bleich (1-1, 9.00) will start for Trenton, while RHP Cody Anderson (1-1, 3.75) is the expected starter for Akron. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1350 AM in Akron.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season the 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks.
